Ogata Gekko gekko portrait Shishikiban Kacho-e

The square shishikiban format appears to have been a favourite of Gekko's. Over 60 prints appear in his oeuvre in this size (even if we exclude his square format fan prints). The subjects and styles of the prints vary widely. His work in the format includes many of the bird and flower images that cemented his reputation as skilled in kacho-e but also includes delightful scenery and figural compositions. The sheer number of these prints means there are multiple pages devoted to the format. I have tried to put the prints with similar themes on one page using kacho-e, people, animals, scenery and miscellaneous as the groupings although at times it is hard to chose which group something belongs in.
